Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

The research of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) for healing and wellness dates back to the 19th century. The concept has been used for even longer. The cells in our bodies work much like a battery through a series of chemical reactions and ion movements. A battery low on charge does not perform as well as it should. Our cells can be viewed in a similar manner. And just like an older battery does not hold a charge as well, our cells tend to not perform as well as we age or because of disease and injury.

How it works

The voltage of a healthy adult cell is about -20 to -25 millivolts. Sickness, disease, stress, or even intense exercise causes this voltage to drop. When the voltage drops below -15 millivolts, our cells become dysfunctional. This leads to fatigue, pain, and an inability to heal properly. By introducing a mild electrical magnetic current to the cells, their voltage can be restored to normal. This has been shown to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and pain, and increase energy.

PEMF basically helps our cells to do their job better. Dr. Jerry Tenant states in his book, Healing is Voltage, that “Chronic disease and loss of well-being is always defined by low electrical charge. With enough voltage and raw materials, the body can heal almost anything.” One study in rats showed that blood flow was increased up to 20% after a session of PEMF compared to controls. They saw a greater increase after a 60 minute session compared to a 15 minute session. Higher blood flow means more oxygen and nutrient delivery to our cells!

Benefits

  • Pain relief

  • Athletic recovery

  • Enhanced muscle function

  • Decreased inflammation

  • Enhanced blood flow and oxygenation

  • Decreased stress

  • Improved bone and wound healing

There is a large body of research and studies that back up the listed benefits. Refer to the sources below for more details!

Safety and Contraindications

  • There are a few conditions for which PEMF is not safe. Those include:

  • People with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers

  • People with active bleeding or hemorrhaging conditions or heavy menstruation

  • People with organ transplants on immunosuppressants

  • Pregnant women (has not yet been proven safe)

How Does it Feel?

The sensation of PEMF therapy is very mild when applied over a large area but can be stronger when concentrated to a specific area of the body. It is never painful and there is no soreness afterwards. Results can be seen after just a few sessions. The application time can range from 15 minutes to an hour. PEMF can benefit just about anyone! We have the Pulse PEMF machine at our Cotswold and Lake Norman locations. Call us for more information!
