Dr. John Cipriani graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York Chiropractic college in March 2004. He also holds a B.S. degree in Exercise Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
In 2003, Dr. Cipriani was selected for a prestigious residency program at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, NC. As a resident at the Naval Hospital, Dr. Cipriani performed grand rounds in internal medicine, radiology, sports medicine, orthopedics, and treated several hundred military personnel with various spinal ailments. Dr. Cipriani was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication and service while serving as a chiropractic intern for the Department of the Navy.
Dr. Cipriani has vast experience working with professional athletes (NHL, NFL, NBA), Olympic, collegiate and local elite high school athletes with an array of orthopedic injuries. His experience, knowledge and bedside manner make him the number one choice in the Lake Norman region for non-surgical, drug free care.

Dr. Nevin Markel is the co-founder of Performance Rehab Associates, owner of Markel Health Performance, a doctor of chiropractic as well as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He incorporates various manual techniques to treat musculoskeletal conditions including Active Release Techniques©, Functional Range Release, Biomedical Acupuncture and Fascial Abrasion Techniques along with cutting-edge rehabilitation programs. Dr. Markel is an instructor for the FIT Institute, teaching other doctors and therapists advanced treatment strategies.
Dr. Markel graduated Cum Laude from New York Chiropractic College and is the former team chiropractor for the Maryland Terrapins, Bowie Baysox and UMBC Retrievers. In addition, he regularly works with a variety of athletes including members of the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, Olympians and yoga practitioners in an effort to correct physical dysfunction and maximize performance. Dr. Markel strongly believes in a patient-centered model of care where the latest manual treatments are combined with individualized rehabilitation programs including corrective exercise, self-treatment strategies, and strength training. He currently serves as clinical director at Velocity Sports and frequently teaches workshops and lectures on anatomy, biomechanics and exercise. Dr. Erin Markel received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Arizona School of Health Sciences in 2008 where she focused her research on knee pain in female runners. She has also received an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Erin returned to the east coast in 2007 after spending time in Colorado and California where she gained experience working with professional and Olympic athletes. She spent her time working and researching in Washington, D.C. at the National Rehabilitation Center as well as sports medicine clinics in the area. Erin is currently a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, confident in treating a variety of orthopedic and musculoskeletal dysfunctions as well as sport related injuries of the recreational and elite athlete. She is also certified in McKenzie evaluation and treatment of the spine as well as in vestibular rehabilitation.
Erin enjoys treating a broad range of patient populations from the geriatric with balance and vestibular disorders, to the every day lifting or overuse injury, to post surgical cases of the recreational or elite athlete.
Kay Trotta, MPT received her Master of Physical Therapy degree at the Medical College of Georgia in 2005. During this time, she focused her research on balance and fall reduction in the aging population. She also received her BS degree in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Georgia.
After graduating, Kay spent 2 years in the Atlanta area focusing on orthopedic injuries, chronic pain, and post-operative rehabilitation through a combination of land based and aquatic therapies.
Since relocating to the Charlotte area, Kay has focused her time in the out-patient orthopedic setting, treating a wide range of musculoskeletal dysfunctions. She enjoys treating individuals of all ages, from young children to the elderly. Kay combines therapeutic exercise with manual therapy techniques including myofascial release, muscle energy, PNF, Maitland, and McKenzie to restore normal movement patterns and maximize function.
Dr. Wes Pope graduated Cum Laude from Life University in Marietta, GA. While in Chiropractic school, Dr. Pope focused his education on managing the muscular and fascial systems of the human body. In conjunction with an Exercise Sport Science degree and years of experience as a personal trainer, Dr. Pope utilizes a variety of soft tissue management systems to help patient’s obtain their functional and performance based goals.
Playing a variety of sports while growing up, Dr. Pope continued his athletic career playing Quarterback for Elon University’s football team. Dr. Pope now executes his competitive nature on the golf course, combining his knowledge on swing biomechanics and upmost passion for the game with his clinical expertise. Obtaining a Titleist Performance Institute certification, Dr. Pope avidly enjoys working with golfers of all ages to help them recover from injuries and improve performance.
Josh Wilson is a Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist (LMBT), Registered Yoga Teacher (200RYT), Integrative Massage and Personal Trainer, and is a certified Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as well as being a certified hard-style Kettlebell instructor.
Josh’s goal is to help people feel better, move better, and perform better. With a simple but demanding approach, Josh uses bodywork, movement training, and education to enhance clients’ mind-body connection through dedication and discipline. Through stability, strength, and physical maintenance of the body, Josh gives clients the tools to make a change, recover fast, and remain pain free.

Dr. Kristin Royen received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from East Carolina University in 2009. After graduation Kristin relocated to the Northern Virginia area where she began her work with a premiere orthopedic practice. Dr. Royen was able to work with a wide array of patients including those with back and neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries and many post operative patients. Kristin moved back to her hometown of Charlotte in 2012. She continued her work in the out-patient orthopedic setting, honing her extensive manual and therapeutic exercise skill set. Kristin has been trained in dry needling, Mulligan, and Graston technique, which she utilizes along with many other manual therapy techniques to achieve the best patient outcomes possible. With a combination of therapeutic exercise and manual therapies Kristin enjoys treating patients of all ages and strives to give high quality, hands on, personalized care.
Kristen Tassinari, CPT, CCA graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina in May 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Kristen is a Certified Chiropractic Assistant credentialed by the North Carolina Chiropractic Association and has worked as a therapy assistant, here at PRA, since May 2016.
Kristen received her Personal Trainer Certification in July of 2016 with the Athletic and Fitness Association of America. Kristen has been training people of all ages and athletic capabilities since receiving this certification and is passionate about rehab, recovery, health and fitness.
Kristen plays an integral role in our collaborative care at Performance Rehab as she is able to apply her knowledge of rehab, injury, and the body into personal training and take our clients safely back to complete exercise and gym activity safely and not to mention the great workout you will receive as well!
